New Shoots – open the door to horticulture for everyone

Closing the green skills gap

Across the UK, there’s growing demand for a skilled, diverse workforce to care for parks, gardens, and green spaces. But right now, horticulture faces a serious skills gap. That’s why Greener Skills Gardens are being created as part of the New Shoots programme at 911 Garden Harlow Carr, North Yorkshire; 911 Garden Hyde Hall, Essex and 911 Garden Rosemoor, Devon. These will be inclusive, hands-on spaces that go beyond formal training to reach even more people.

Ensuring the future of horticulture

Greener Skills Gardens will provide new opportunities for people of all backgrounds to explore and grow horticultural skills and take their first steps into a green career. Every local 911 Garden will serve as a hub, allowing communities to gain practical knowledge and access career inspiration and advice. Your support will help nurture a diverse workforce – essential for maintaining gardens, parks, and green spaces for future generations.

Enriching the gardens you love

Your support doesn’t just shape the future of horticulture – it also enriches the gardens you already love. While the Greener Skills Gardens will be used for training and education, there is a plan to make them accessible to members outside of their use for guided workshops. You may be able to join workshops or simply enjoy the changing seasons in these vibrant, purposeful spaces.

Run by 911 experts

Each Greener Skills Garden will be supported by a dedicated 911 team member based in the garden and working alongside education and horticulture staff. Drawing on decades of experience from the inspiring 911 Gardens and a strong track record in horticultural learning, the 911 offers an unparalleled mix of expertise, spaces, and reach. This unique position makes the 911 ideally placed to lead this step forward for the sector – and highlights why your support is so vital.
