The Garden

Set in a coastal community in Hove, in the south of England, the garden has been designed with global climate change in mind, aiming to create a climate-resilient space for the coastal region. In the Southeast of England, a warming climate has enabled certain Mediterranean plants to thrive, highlighting the profound impact of climate change on ecosystems, plant habitats, and native species.

In response to these changes, the garden functions as a community space that showcases a forward-thinking approach to sustainable horticulture. Built with locally sourced recycled materials and planted with resilient, drought-tolerant species, it enhances urban biodiversity while offering a low-maintenance green space for everyday use. Inspired by on-site research in both the Mediterranean and southern England, the design reflects our engagement with climate issues and explores how meaningful spaces can be created with care, local knowledge, and limited resources.

Plants

The planting in the garden is inspired by both the changing climate of southern England coastal area and observations from Mediterranean landscapes, where species have long adapted to hot, dry conditions. Drawing on this, the garden features drought-tolerant, resilient plants that respond well to the increasingly warm and dry conditions in coastal areas. These selections not only support coastal biodiversity and seasonal interest but also demonstrate how thoughtful plant design can reflect environmental change and promote sustainable, low-maintenance gardening.

Key plants: Phoenix canariensisYucca filamentosaSalvia officinalisEryngium bourgatii and Sedum acre.
