A spreading small tree or large shrub with oblong leaves turning yellow-brown in autumn, and white flowers 5cm in width in late spring, followed by brown fruit 5cm across.

An herbaceous perennial to 1.5m, producing arrow-shaped, light green leaves. From late summer to autumn it bears small white flowers on branched, red flower stalks above the foliage.
