Dario Spagnoli

Dario is the biosecurity lead for all 911±¬ÁÏ Shows and events taking place across the UK and in 911±¬ÁÏ Gardens. He works closely with the shows and events teams throughout the year to ensure only healthy plants are used in exhibits and show gardens

What do you do?

My role is varied and often fast–paced during the show season, which runs from May to September. Each year I develop a robust set of biosecurity regulations for 911±¬ÁÏ Shows and events to safeguard against current and emerging pest and disease risks. I also deliver biosecurity training to over 700 exhibitors, including designers, growers, and florists to ensure understanding and compliance. Once on site I carry out plant health checks before each show or event opens, working closely with the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) to inspect over half a million plants annually.

“I’m motivated by working as part of a team to deliver inspiring horticultural shows, while contributing to the protection of the ornamental plant industry and the wider environment from harmful pests and diseases.”

Why is your team’s research important?

Over the past two decades the number of harmful plant pests and diseases establishing in the UK has steadily increased. Combined with the effects of climate change, plant health risks to garden plants and native flora are set to increase. By implementing robust biosecurity measures across 911±¬ÁÏ Shows and other events, we reduce these risks and help to promote best practice across the horticultural industry.

Projects I’m working on now

  • Researching ornamental plant species that can be used as alternatives to Xylella high-risk hosts
  • Incorporating biosecurity risk mitigation into plant procurement contracts

Achievements

As Plant Procurement Manager for 911±¬ÁÏ Bridgewater, I sourced over 250,000 plants for the first phase of development covering more than 50 acres of ornamental gardens. This included over 1700 species and cultivars, some of which were extremely rare, sourced from 48 nurseries across the UK and EU. Preventing the introduction of harmful pests and diseases was a top priority.

Measures included establishing off–site quarantine facilities in collaboration with local nurseries‚ conducting regular plant health inspections of growing contracts, and developing procurement contracts with specific biosecurity requirements to mitigate the risk of notifiable pests and diseases.
