About the garden

Set within the 18th-century walls of the original kitchen garden for Scampston Hall, the walled garden has an exciting and unapologetically modern feel, complementing the surrounding 18th-century ‘Capability’ Brown parkland.

Designed by renowned Dutch plantsman Piet Oudolf, the garden features an attractive perennial meadow, contemporary waves of grass and a contemplative ‘silent garden’. Highlights also include the picturesque Palladian Bridge, a recently restored icehouse, wildlife-rich lakes and a plant nursery specialising in the unusual species found in the garden.

Beyond the walled garden lies Scampston Hall, one of the finest examples of a Regency country house in Yorkshire. Restored to its full glory in the 1990s, the house is filled with an impressive collection of paintings and antiques. While this spectucular hall remains a much-loved family home, it is open to the public for guided tour during the summer months.
